Its going to be a long week...

Soooo game 1 of the Series has started and I'm sick to my stomach. Phils are up 2-0 at the bottom of the 3rd. I am freakin' out (Rays have bases loaded right now). Its going to be a long week...game 2 tomorrow, 3 & 4 Saturday AND Sunday (which I am going to). Penn State is also playing Ohio State on Sat (at the same time) - I am going to have an ulcer.

On another note, my cat Jackie is supporting the Phils by dressing up...

Yes, its a Santa costume, but its red. Don't make fun of her, she's very excited to support her team.

Let's go Phillies!!

Last night the Phillies advanced to the World Series by beating the Dodgers 5 - 1 (4 -1 in the series). This is AMAZING. My stomach actually gets butterflies just think about it.

And one of the best things is that I am going to GAME 4 of the Series. I can't believe it. Let's go Phils!

4 Things I hate to admit...

Jill tagged me to tell 4 things I hate to admit, so here goes:

1) I'm stealing her #1 - ask for help. Miss Independent here. Too much many would say...

2) I love my cat A LOT. Being single, its hard to admit without fear of being titled a cat lady.

3) I occasionally like a day where I don't interact with anybody at all. Pure silence. No talking. It recharges me. Should be interesting if I ever get married / have kids.

4) I occasionally wash my hair with vinegar. Makes it nice and healthy. Smells a little bit though.

Jill's the only one I know that reads this with a blog, so no tag for me.

Last pictures...

It seems that I have fallen out of the habit of taking pictures. This is partially due to that my camera has an attitude (doesn't turn on sometimes, but I think its the batteries) and everybody else has digital too. I rely on the latter (who are more reliable), but because of online picture sharing, I don't necessarily have good resolution copies. I have now resolved to take more pictures. Anyways, this blog is about the last pictures I have on my hard drive - they are from my good friend Jasmine's (Iowa State) visit in April 2008. I just saw her this past weekend too for Loretta's bachelorette party in Chicago - great time, but of course no pics til somebody sends me a link...

Here are some pics from her visit. She was with me for about 3 days and I got to play tourist - we went into Philly, Atlantic City, Cape May, and of course King of Prussia for shopping. I had a great time and I hope to visit her soon in Milwaukee.

Candy Corn

The Halloween candy is now out (as are the Christmas decorations - too soon!). I have a bit of a liking to candy corn and also the pumpkin variety. They are quite tasty and I can never just eat a handful. Oh well - its only once a year ;) Here's the history on candy corn (brief and borrowed from the internet - might not be accurate, but its fun):

For those of us over the age of 25, when you think of Halloween candy you think of candy corn, those sugary little spikes of Halloween cheer. They've been around for as long as I remember and even as long as my grandparents remember but did you know that they were invented in the 1880's? Who the first person to make these tasty treats was is unknown but the Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia was the first to go into commercial production. However, the company most closely associated with this wonderful confection is the Goelitz Confectionery Company. Founder Gustav Goelitz, a German immigrant, began commercial production of the treat in 1898 in Cincinnati and is today the oldest manufacturer of the Halloween icon.

Candy was manufactured seasonally from March through November. Large kettles were used to cook the basic ingredients of candy corn, sugar, water, and corn syrup into a slurry. Fondant for smooth texture and marshmallow for a soft bite would be whipped in. When the right consistency was reached the hot candy would be poured into hand-held buckets called runners.

Next, men called stringers would walk backward pouring the steaming candy into trays of cornstarch imprinted with kernel-shaped molds. Three passes were made, one for each white, orange, and yellow color. A strenuous job at best before the days of air-conditioning and electric fans.

Candy corn was originally sold in bulk containers like most foods products of the time. They were packed in wooden buckets, tubs, and cartons to be delivered by wagon and train over relatively short distances. Perishability prevented widespread distribution.

During WWI, Herman Goelitz, son of Gustav, moved to Fairfield, California to start his own company, the Herman Goelitz Candy Company. Their product? Candy Corn! The fortune of the Halloween treat would rise and fall many times as recession and boom, war and peace, affected the humble confection. Throughout the hard times it was the sale of candy corn that kept the companies afloat. In the sugar crisis of the mid 1970's when the price of raw sugar skyrocketed the company had to borrow heavily to buy sugar to keep production up. After the crisis the market plummeted. Many companies went out of business. It was demand for the candy corn that kept Goelitz from bankruptcy.

Today you won't have to look very hard to find candy corn. Computer and machine aided production have made them a plentiful staple no matter what time of year. So plentiful in fact that according to the National Confectioners Association, in 2001 candy manufacturers sold more than 20 million pounds of candy corn. Roughly 8.3 billion kernels! Very impressive for a product that has remained virtually unchanged for well over 100 years.

90210...

Tonight the 3rd episode of the new Beverly Hills, 90210 is on...I love this show (old one especially). I am quite happy with the new one - especially with some of the old characters (Kelly had Dylan's child - SHOCKER)...

My tiny obsession has resulted in at sometimes leaving my old job at a specific time to watch re-runs, purchasing DVD's of past seasons, and now DVRing episodes on Soapnet (I always have 5 to watch...). A friend also changed her ring tone to the 90210 theme...

Oh well. Its better than some weird Star Wars obsession, though Leila has sweet buns on the side of her head.
